Southern Exposure, recorded in 2001 by Johnny Sandlin, is Ken Watters Group's first quartet recording for Summit Records. This recording features David Marlow (piano), Roy Yarbrough (acoustic bass), Jay Frederick (drums), Ken Watters (trumpet/flugelhorn) & special guest saxophonist / Palmetto Recording Artist Joel Frahm.
Southern Exposure spent ten weeks on the US mainstream jazz charts. At the suggestion on Johnny Sandlin, who produced the Allman Brothers' original version of the southern rock classic "Jessica," Ken Watters Group covered the song in their own style, alternating between straight 8th jazz & hard-core salsa feels. Lee Prosser of The Jazz Journalist's Association called this arrangement "Quite possibly the coolest cover ever recorded by a jazz group..." The CD opens with this track.
Also covered are Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" & James Taylor's "Fire & Rain." Interspursed are the Ken Watters originals "Cooler On The Horizon," April Third" & "Pathfinder" as well as a few carefully chosen jazz standards.
"Ken Watters and his talented group of musicians add a whole new exciting dimension to the sounds of jazz with their style, approach, and joy of performances. Ken Watters Group has a solid hit with SOUTHERN EXPOSURE, a CD to be enjoyed often and anywhere!" - The Jazz Review
